It’s a job well done, writes Freddy Jussien.
✅ The European Parliament adopted its position on the Disability Rights Strategy after 2025. Rosa Estaras Ferragut MEP led the work in the Parliament.
It’s a job well done. There is a lot there that Inclusion Europe wants to see.
Here’s what the Parliament asks the European Commission to do:
➡️ Specific actions to support countries to transition from substitute decision-making to supported decision-making (missing in the current Strategy).
➡️ EU strategy on the transition from institutions to independent living and community-based services with data, monitoring, and mutual learning.
➡️ Keeping the enabling conditions for disability rights in EU funds and “explore” (?) earmarking for social inclusion. Earmarking means saying a certain part of the money must go to this purpose.
➡️ Employment and Skills Guarantee, meaning clear objectives and EU Funds for employment, and designed to support the transition from sheltered employment to regular employment.
➡️ Traineeships, mentorship programmes in particular for people with intellectual disabilities, who barely benefit from these programmes (especially in EU institutions).
👉 I’m looking forward to hearing the Commissioner Hadja Lahbib at the European Day of Persons with Disabilities conference next week.
Let’s hope we get confirmation of these proposed actions.
